Great minds in ICT converge to Connect – Communicate – Collaborate
We kick off the month of June with a lot of excitement as we co-host the inaugural Nethope Africa Chapter 2017 Conference. You might wonder why we are this excited. After all, it’s just another organizational conference, right? Well, not quite. Today, Monday 5th June, up to Wednesday 7th June, Nethope – the Africa Chapter – in collaboration with the Inter Agency Working Group (IAWG) is convening ICT and Development member organizations from Africa and the Global North, to engage participants in a timely conversation about communicating, collaborating and innovating in order to improve information technology (IT) in development. Additionally, we will be exploring the benefits of cross-sector partnerships to improve IT service delivery among International Relief and Development organizations working in Africa.
This conference is coming at a time when the impact of information and communications technologies (ICT) in development is peaking. This platform is a unique opportunity for industry leaders in the field of ICT to engage meaningfully in an insightful dialogue. As a result, learning will be promoted through sharing of past experiences (case studies), adoption of professional best practices and identification of opportunities for scaling up ICT solutions for sustainable development. The overall goal of the conference is to re-establish ICT as catalyst for innovation, growth, inclusion, partnership and sustainability, within the continent.
The discussions at the conference will be purposely be inspired by the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that have elevated ICT as an enabler for development. Connectivity – whether the Internet or mobile phones – is increasingly bringing information, financial and health services, as well as humanitarian aid – to remote areas, especially during and after emergencies. This new wave is helping change people’s lives in unprecedented ways.
According to the World Bank, new information and communications technologies (ICT), in particular high-speed internet, are changing the way companies do business, transforming public service delivery and democratizing innovation. With 10 percent increase in high speed Internet connections, economic growth increases by 1.3 percent.
Buildup to NetHope Vancouver 2017
The theme of this conference is adopted from the SDGs – “Leave No One Behind – Connect I Communicate I Collaborate. This will ideally be a buildup to the theme of the upcoming Nethope Global Summit, “Digital Strategies for Impact – Step Up!” that will be held in Vancouver on 23 – 27 October 2017. This is therefore part of a larger conversation that will capture and elevate the African context in this field of ICT for Development (ICT4D).
“Step Up” is a multi-faceted call to action, a rallying cry to the over 50-plus International nonprofit member organizations to (in a nut shell) “work towards the shared vision of an information society, empowered by the interconnected world, where telecommunication/ICT enables and accelerates socially, economically and environmentally sustainable growth and development for everyone.” – The Connect 2020 Agenda mandate.
